Volunteering with Scholars Literacy Program

  • Attend one in-person training session
  • Commit to a regular schedule for at least two semesters

As part of Wesley-Rankin Community Center’s mission to bridge gaps in education and skills development, we have collaborated with the June Shelton School to offer literacy intervention to students in West Dallas with learning differences. Over the past 4 years, our program has grown to include a second site of service at St. Mary of Carmel Catholic School working with a total of 60 students.

We use the nationally recognized Sequential English Education (SEE) curriculum to teach students reading, spelling, and handwriting using tools that align with how they best learn. Each student receives tutoring in a 1:1 to 1:3 teacher-student ratio. Our instruction method is systematic and cumulative, provided by trained tutors, and aims to improve a student’s understanding of the English language. In addition to the Wesley-Rankin volunteer onboarding process, all potential tutors must participate in a one-day training. Trainings are typically offered once per semester on a Saturday.

We need additional tutors to make quality intervention possible. Scholars sessions are held on Mondays-Thursdays from 2:30-4:00 PM at St. Mary of Carmel’s campus and on Saturdays from 9:00 AM-12:00 PM at Wesley-Rankin’s campus. Weekday tutors are asked to commit to one day a week and Saturday tutors are asked to commit to 2 Saturdays a month for at least 2 semesters (Fall, Spring, Summer). This consistency ultimately has a positive impact on students’ performance and learning
