Scholars

 

The Wesley-Rankin Scholars program provides support to students with learning differences such as dyslexia and ADHD. It also serves students who have experienced difficulty in the traditional classroom. The program is intended to help students with reading, spelling, handwriting and memory.

Scholars students participate in individual and group reading intervention that uses a nationally recognized Sequential English Education (SEE) curriculum and a multi-sensory structured language (MSL) approach. This direct instruction method is systematic and cumulative, provided by trained tutors, and aims to improve students’ understanding of the English language. 

Scholars operates year-round. The Wesley-Rankin Scholars program takes place on Saturday mornings from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM and is located at Wesley-Rankin Community Center, 3100 Crossman Ave. The St. Mary of Carmel Scholars (SMC) program is open to students attending SMC, and operates Monday-Thursday from 3:00 – 4:00 PM. 

Program Requirements

The typical intervention process for a student with a learning difference takes time. We seek families who are ready to commit to this program for at least one year. We currently serve families who have been in the program since it began in 2018.

Because space in the program is extremely limited, there is an attendance policy that allows for no more than three absences per semester (fall, spring, summer). The program fee for Scholars is $40 per semester. If all sessions in a semester are attended by a student, the fee will be waived for the following semester.

Financial aid is available to families upon request so that registration fees are not a barrier to anyone participating in Wesley-Rankin’s programs.

Please visit Wesley-Rankin Community Center, 3100 Crossman Ave., or call us at 469-298-8342 for an intake conversation and to complete paperwork. We recommend calling before you visit to make sure the necessary staff people are available to speak with you. Bring any school documents such as feedback from teachers, report cards, IEP/504 documentation, or proof of an evaluation for learning differences. 

A student does not need to have a formal diagnosis to be eligible to participate in tutoring.

Would My Child Benefit From Scholars?

Your child might benefit from the Scholars Program if they exhibit some or all of the following behaviors:

  • Difficulty with sound/symbol correspondence. What sound does each letter make?
  • Difficulty rhyming
  • Difficulty with reading: cannot break apart words into sounds and/or cannot put sounds together to make words
  • Visual errors
    • Discriminating between letters (d vs. b; p vs. q)
    • Visual memory (difficulty copying notes from the board in class)
    • Spelling and written expression
  • Auditory errors
    • Discriminating between sounds in words (mixing up smug vs. snug)
    • Auditory memory (difficulty following directions, taking notes)
